Glacier Park Lodge was built almost a century ago by the Great Northern Railway. Situated on the Blackfeet Reservation, the hotel site was purchased from the Piegan, a tribe of the Blackfeet nation. This site was in a settlement then known as Midvale. When the present railway depot was built in 1912, the area was renamed Glacier Park Station and then became known as East Glacier Park in 1950.

The section of the lodge containing the lobby and dining room was erected in 1912-1913 and opened to guests on June 15, 1913. The opening was a very joyful event. Hundreds of Blackfeet Indians erected their teepees on the grounds and some 600 invited guests attended the celebration. Few of these elderly Indians had ever been beyond the boundaries of the government reservation and they never ceased to wonder at the seemingly unlimited powers the “Great Spirit” had bestowed on the white man as the massive lodge took shape.

They stood and watched in awe as the gigantic fir and cedar columns, which would support the verandahs and form a colonnade in the lobby, were unloaded from flatcars. Weighing 15 tons each, only two of the huge timbers could be loaded onto each flatcar and when they arrived in Montana, they had to be dragged by mule teams from the railhead to the building site. The Indians promptly named the new lodge “Omahkoyis” or, translated “Big Tree Lodge.”

These immense timbers, which support the lodge, were probably 500 to 800 years old when they were cut and all of them retain their bark. There are sixty of them, 36 to 42 inches in diameter and 40 feet long. In the lobby, there is Douglas fir and the verandahs are supported by cedars from Washington.

The Lodge was hardly open to guests before necessity for enlargement became recognized. During the winter of 1913-1914, the annex building, employee’s quarters, powerhouse, and laundry were built and the dining room was expanded. Overall, it took a crew of 75 men a year and a half to construct the two main buildings.

Today 161 guest rooms can accommodate over 500 people. There is also the Great Northern Steak and Rib House, a cocktail lounge, a gift shop featuring local Blackfeet crafts, an outdoor swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course, a nine-hole pitch ‘n putt course and Remedies Day Spa featuring massage and other relaxing treatments.

The Great Northern Wing is attached to the Main Lodge with rooms located on all four floors. Main Lodge rooms are located on the second and third floors of the main lodge and are smaller than the Great Northern Wing rooms. Family rooms have multiple beds and are located on the third floor of the Lodge and Great Northern Wing. Alpine wilderness themed Suites are located throughout the Lodge and Great Northern Wing. The Glacier Golf House is located approximately 1/2 mile from the lodge and other facilities. All guestrooms at Lake McDonald are rustic, yet comfortable. In keeping in the era in which all of the rooms were built, they offer guests modest amenities and old-world style accommodations resulting in a one-of-a kind, National Park lodging experience.

A limited number of ADA accessible rooms are available and are booked based upon space available. Only designated guide, service and/or hearing companion animals are allowed in the hotel. All rooms are accessed via stairs only and are not sold based on view. Rooms contain double, queen and/or twin beds and a private bathroom. Glacier Park Lodge is a smoke free, four-story facility with designated outdoor smoking areas. The self parking lot is located a short walk from the lodge.

The lodge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 28, 1987 and highlighted in the 2008 National Geographic™ Crown of the Continent Geotourism Map Guide.
