Whitefish Winter Carnival

Jan 28, 2016
Don’t miss the Whitefish Winter Carnival! It’s a fun family-friendly tradition chock full of quirky events! Have a hoot at the grand parade on Main Street, dare to jump into freezing Whitefish Lake at the penguin plunge and spectate at the exciting skijoring competition. To add to the fun, you’ll experience locals dressed up as penguins, mountain men, viking divas, yetis and the royal court all in the spirit of the Whitefish Winter Carnival.

Where did this wacky tradition originate? Legend has it that Ullr, the Nordic God of Snow settled on the Big Mountain in Northwest Montana. However, trouble came for Ullr and his queen when they encountered a group of unruly yetis set upon kidnapping the queen. Luckily, Ullr defeated the yetis from both kidnapping his queen and bothering the people of Whitefish.  To pay homage to their winter king, the people of Whitefish created the Whitefish Winter Carnival. Hail Ullr!
